Stephen Brockwell reads at the In/Words + Capital Slam: A Summer Poetry Show

INWORDS and CAPSLAM: A SUMMER POETRY SHOW
Sorry for yelling, but I want to make sure nobody misses this. We wish to invite everyone (that means you, yes you… or, wait… okay, yeah, you) to a very special event that will see In/Words Magazine & Press join forces with Ottawa’s Capital Poetry Slam for a special night of poetry. The idea for this show was birthed from the collective desire of CapSlam Coordinators and the In/Words editors to bring together local poets for a night of creativity and expression within the Ottawa poetry community. In coming together, the members of CapSlam and In/Words hope to put together a show that celebrates poetry’s many forms and communities. A good show is also a pretty easy way to get a bunch of cool people together in a room on a sticky summer night to have some fun. The evening’s lineup is as follows:

The show will also open with the beautiful vocals of Julia Allen and her ukulele. Julia is an up-and-coming Ottawa based musician and both Julia and her music are contagious. There will also be a DJ spinning vinyl to facilitate intermission/post show mingling.

The show will kick off at 7 pm Friday, August 1st at Pressed Café on Gladstone. Tickets can be bought presale or at the door. All performers are loaning their time to help support these two poetry organizations, as all proceeds will directly contribute to In/Words and CapSlam operations.

Presale tickets can be purchased at In/Words’ free monthly open mic event in the basement of The Clocktower Brew Pub (575 Bank St) on Wednesday, July 30th (9-11 pm). They can also be purchased at the In/Words Writers' Circle every Wednesday at 7 pm, held at Bridgehead, 750 Bank Street.

Marilyn Irwin features at In/Words Magazine Shivers: A Showcase

above/ground press author Marilyn Irwin features at the second official In/Words Showcase, hosted by In/Words Magazine [see the facebook invitation here]. Irwin features as part of a group of "new and established artists to demonstrate the wide range of talent in the Canadian literary scene" including Ali Alikhani, Kaleb Hikele, Jane Silcott and Kaleigh Watts.

Irwin is the author of three poetry chapbooks, two of which have been produced by above/ground press: for when you pick daisies (2010) and flicker (2012). Her work also features in the new anthology Ground Rules: the best of the second decade of above/ground press, 2003-2013 (Chaudiere Books, 2013).

The show, which will kick off at 7 pm on January 10, 2014 at Pressed Café on Gladstone, will showcase art ranging from indie-folk jams to heartfelt memoirs. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10. Students with a valid student ID card can get discounted entry for $7. Proceeds will benefit the artists performing.

Earl has published a small handful of chapbooks, including three with above/ground press: E l e a n o r (2007), The Sad Phoenician’s Other Woman (2008), and Sex First & Then A Sandwich (2012), all of which are possibly (most likely) still available. She may even have a new small item for this reading as well (sometimes she produces small publications for readings).

above/ground press author and Apt. 9 Press editor/publisher Cameron Anstee (photo by Pearl Pirie) reads this month as the feature at The Reading Series (the reading series of In/Words), hosted by Chris Johnson. Anstee has published a small handful of chapbooks, including two with above/ground press: Frank St. (2010) and Regarding Renewal (2012), both of which are still available. And who knows? He may even have a new small item for this reading as well (he usually produces some kind of small handout for readings).

This month In/Words has the privilege of featuring Gwen Guth. She is a super cool lady and I am tremendously excited to launch this years Reading Series with her. Gwen's work has previously been showcased by ottawater, bywords, yawp, above/ground press, Friday Circle ( The Flash of Longing chapbook), Tree and the University of Ottawa Press.

This is not a reading to miss - I mean it - it is going to be really, really great.

There will be a reasonable open mic set with new and exciting prizes.

Gwendolyn Guth, mother of three active boys, notes that super mom and super model have far less in common than their assonance would suggest. She has the enviable privilege of talking about literature for a living, at Heritage College in Gatineau. She is a long-time supporter of and participant in Ottawa literary ventures, including Bywords, above/ground, Ottawater, yawp, Friday Circle, Rideau Review, etc. Her second poetry chapbook, Good People (above/ground press, 2010), anticipates her first trade book, due any year now and fiercely successful in her dreams. She craves inner peace but settles for outer calm.
