new from above/ground press: A Note on the Text, by Seth Landman

A Note on the Text

A Note on the Text
I have used you
where other words are not
where I am
alone a little
walk a little strong wind
clear eyes full of stars
coming off the crystal the lake
seems to be tonight.
I will write later to light
matches. As much as we are that
we are sentinel listening
over the five or six miles
of threshold between
one town and the next.
This town I found
the cause of it
the river. I have used one thing
where I have had many and the winter
has been difficult and the winter
has not even started yet.
Burn purpose or burn
some big habit you can’t
go back to beforehand.
It will be hard to read
the reminders you set
in the dark preceding
the light in the morning.
By you I mean so it is not
strange but since and promised
and whole in sickness and in
any condition resisted
the big mind shining I know also that.

new from above/ground press: Parapagus, a poem by Roland Prevost

Parapagus

[ censorship confers ] x { prehistory }

We are reduced to call upon the eye and ear.
A backfield dig unearths two gleaming pre-human
Skulls.  Scattered artefacts lie between them.
Hard dirt under cracked fingernails: dark, dry.
Comparisons of brain cavities, occipital angles,
Jawbones.  To them we’d seem: Graceful.
Fragile.  Nervous.  Perceptive.  Even when they
Lived, sheathed in silence, their eloquent tools
Spoke necessities for them, as still now.

m says: do you have that problem, all your socks disappearing into the washing machine?
they slide into this hole
there’s this whole mountain of socks in there

he – oh mysterious he – tells me:        intuition
use it
you don’t have to know what you’re doing
just do it
                        make something
                        don’t plan it all out
take something small and go with it
                        see where it takes you

                                                            wise words

at a reading at a library on a downtown ottawa street elizabeth hay says:

you don’t always have to know what you are doing

and so: I promptly go outside and call nancy cooper alice cooper

she laughs

like my mother and her coils
she has a shape in mind and that’s it, start rolling
the clay
